A figure of speech is a figurative language, consisting of a single word or phrase, that deviates from ordinary words to enhance their effectiveness, conveying meaning beyond the literal meaning through similes, metaphors, or personifications.

TYPES

The figures of speech list is more then a hundred but here are some commonly used types are given
along with examples that will be helpful for you.

1. SIMILE:

In simile two unlike things are explicitly compared. For example, “Najma is like a fairy”. A
simile is introduced by words such as like, so, as etc.

2. METAPHOR:

Metaphor is an informal or implied simile in which words like, as, so are omitted. For example,
“He is like a lion (Simile) “and “He is a lion (metaphor)”.

3. PRESONIFICATION:

Personification is an attribution of personal nature, intelligence or character to inanimate
objects or abstract notions. we use some phrases like as, the furious storm, the
thirsty ground, and the pitiless cold etc.

4. METONYMY:

It is meant for a change of name. It is a substitute of the thing names for the
thing meant. Following examples will clarify the concept.

  • The pen is mightier than the sword.
  • “Give me a hand” means to give someone help

5. APOSTROPHE:

Apostrophe is a figures of speech that is used to address someone who is absent or already dead. It can also be used to address an abstract quality or idea, and even a non-living object. Example: “Boy’s mother loved him very much.”

6. HYPERBOLE:

Hyperbole is a statement made emphatic by overstatement. “mile-high ice cream cones” is an example of hyperbole.
